EDITORS COMMENTS
This gelatin silver print captures the grandeur of the Memorial Hall of the Centennial Exposition in 1876. The photograph, taken by an American photographer from the 19th century, showcases this remarkable architectural masterpiece that still stands today as a testament to history. The Centennial International Exhibition was a momentous event held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This World's Fair took place from May to November and attracted visitors from all over with its diverse exhibits and celebrations. Designed by Herman J. Schwarzmann, Memorial Hall is a stunning example of beaux-arts style architecture constructed using brick, glass, iron, and granite materials. Originally serving as an art gallery building during the exposition, it housed numerous art exhibits that were contributed for this historic occasion. Due to an overwhelming number of art contributions received during the fair, a separate annex had to be built specifically for their display. Additionally, another building was erected solely dedicated to showcasing photography. This gelatin silver print offers us a glimpse into this significant moment in American history and allows us to appreciate both its architectural beauty and historical significance. Preserved within these frames is not just a photograph but also a piece of our nation's heritage that continues to inspire awe even after all these years.
