EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Brussels allegorical tapestry depicting the month of December. Created around 1525 by Bernaert van Orley or an artist from his circle, this wool and silk masterpiece is part of The Medallion Months series. The central scene portrays the blood-letting of a boar by a butcher, assisted by his helper and a woman. To the left, two boys hold torches while conversing with their maid and her master and mistress. On the right side, a group gathers around a warming fire. Above them all stands December personified as FOLUS, surrounded by mischievous putti blowing winds through the cloudy sky filled with snowflakes. The intricate circular frame features winged putti-faces along with a medallion showcasing a ram inscribed "DECEMBRE". In each corner, we find fascinating details: the North Wind represented as AQUILON with his bellows in one top corner; an enigmatic bearded man in another; an owl and various birds inhabiting a wood in the lower right corner; and finally, a man and woman capturing birds in bags and cages on the lower left. Restorations have been made to preserve this remarkable artwork's light silks and brown wools over time. This photograph was taken by eChristies Images for Fine Art Finder, allowing us to admire every intricate detail of this Flemish treasure that has transcended centuries without losing its allure or storytelling power.
