EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures HRH The Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, in his striking uniform as a member of the 3rd von Zieten Hussars in the German Army. This pre-1914 image showcases the unique pantaloons worn by Prince Arthur, highlighting his prestigious position within the regiment. Prince Arthur was born on the 81st birthday of Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, one of his godfathers. As Queen Victoria's third son and named after such an esteemed figure, he held a significant place within British royalty. In 1879, he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia and became colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars to commemorate their union. The appointments bestowed upon Prince Arthur were purely ceremonial but reflected his family's close ties with Germany. With Queen Victoria being the last British monarch from the House of Hanover and through his father Prince Albert's lineage as Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, these connections were deeply rooted. This photograph not only portrays a distinguished military figure but also sheds light on historical alliances between nations during this era. The fine details captured in this print offer viewers a glimpse into an important chapter in European history where royal families played pivotal roles in shaping diplomatic relations.
