EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph print depicts The General Screw Steam Shipping Company's Screw Steam Ship Croesus, a magnificent vessel from 1854. The artist, Thomas Goldsworth Dutton, has captured the grandeur of this ship in exquisite detail, showcasing its impressive size and power.
The Croesus was a true marvel of engineering for its time, boasting 2500 tons and 400 horsepower. This print is dedicated to the directors of the GSSS Company by the publisher H.J. Buchan, highlighting the importance of this ship in maritime history.
Built by G&J Rennie with a two-bladed propeller that could be raised while under sail, the Croesus was initially intended for the Australian Mail Service before being repurposed as a government transport during the Crimean War. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when she caught fire in the Gulf of Genoa before embarking Sardinian troops and became a total wreck.
In this scene off the Needles, we see another ship approaching - adding depth and movement to this image. Signed by the artist in plate, this lithograph is not just a work of art but also a historical record of an important moment in naval history.
