EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the essence of Major-General Sir James Kempt, a distinguished figure in British military history. Painted around 1824 by an anonymous English artist, this oil on canvas print showcases the commanding presence and resolute character of Sir James Kempt. Sir James Kempt's illustrious career spanned several significant events during the Napoleonic Wars. Serving as a major-general on Wellington's staff in Spain and France from 1811 to 1814, he demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership skills. He was wounded at Badajoz but continued to serve with unwavering dedication. During the Battle of Quatre Bras, Sir James Kempt commanded the 8th Brigade under Sir Thomas Picton. When Picton tragically fell at Waterloo, it was Kempt who took charge of the 5th Division, exhibiting remarkable composure amidst chaos. At the time this portrait was painted, Sir James Kempt held the position of lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia. The painting beautifully depicts him in his full military regalia, exuding authority and confidence. With his sword by his side and wearing a distinctive hat adorned with plumes, Major-General Sir James Kempt stands tall as a symbol of honor and valor.
