Milk Boy with Family Group
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating watercolour and gouache print created by Henry Perlee Parker in approximately 1840. The focal point of the image is a young boy, dressed in patched clothing, who holds two white mice. It is likely that he travels from place to place showcasing these unusual creatures to earn a living. Parker's attention to detail shines through his elaborate technique, particularly evident in the intricate colouring on the faces of the figures. He skillfully employs fine parallel lines and small dots of vibrant paint to bring life and depth to his subjects. Painted during Parker's time in Newcastle between 1815 and 1841, this artwork offers a glimpse into early nineteenth-century street scenes. The surrounding landscape depicts a rural setting with donkeys and other farm animals present, emphasizing the connection between urban trade and countryside livelihoods. The composition also features various members of a family group, including women and men engaged in daily activities such as milking cows or selling goods as street vendors. This portrayal highlights both gender roles within society at that time and the importance of community ties. Overall, "Milk Boy with Family Group" captures not only an intriguing moment but also provides valuable insights into nineteenth-century fashion trends, population dynamics, rural life, and artistic techniques employed during this period.
