EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Galibis Indians, exhibition at the Paris Zoological Garden, 1882" takes us back to a significant moment in history. The poster, created by Jules Cheret in 1882, showcases the Les Indiens Galibis - Human Zoo exhibition held at the Jardin Zoologique d'Acclimatation in Paris. During this time, Kali'na or Galibis Indians from French Guiana were brought to Paris and exhibited as part of an ethnographic exposition. This controversial practice involved showcasing individuals from different cultures as objects of curiosity for public viewing. Tragically, some of these indigenous people lost their lives during their time in captivity and were buried on the premises. Today, their remains lie beneath what was once the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions within the Bois de Boulogne area. The image captures a scene with several members of the Galibis Indian community: men, women, children all residing together in huts reminiscent of their homeland. It provides insight into their way of life while also raising questions about ethics and human rights. This photograph serves as a reminder that our understanding and treatment of different cultures have evolved over time. It prompts reflection on past practices that may be viewed differently today. Through art like this print by Bridgeman Images, we can explore historical events that shaped our world and strive for greater cultural sensitivity moving forward.
