This powerful print captures a haunting moment from history, depicting the brutal punishment inflicted upon a prisoner aboard a prison hulk. Published in 1934 as part of "The Martyrs of Tolpuddle" this illustration transports us back to 19th century England when transportation was used as a means of punishment for criminals. In this image, we witness the harrowing scene unfold on board the converted warship. The prisoner is tied and secured, helpless against his fate. With whip in hand, the jailer prepares to administer lashes with the dreaded cat o' nine tails – an instrument known for its excruciating pain.
