EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the final moments of the S.S. Athenia as she sinks into the cold waters of the North Atlantic, following a torpedo strike from a German submarine on September 3, 1939. The S.S. Athenia was the first ship to be sunk during the Second World War, marking the beginning of a long and devastating conflict that would last for six years. The steam turbine-powered passenger liner, which was on a voyage from Liverpool, England to Montreal, Canada, was carrying over 1,100 passengers and crew, many of whom were British and Canadian citizens, as well as a number of American and German travelers. The attack came as a shock to the world, as the United Kingdom and Germany had signed an agreement to avoid attacking passenger ships and neutral vessels. The German submarine, U-30, which was responsible for the attack, claimed to have mistaken the Athenia for a British warship. However, the sinking of the Athenia resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. The tragic event fueled anti-German sentiment in Britain and the United States, and contributed to the growing sense of urgency for military action against Germany. This evocative engraving, taken from 'The War in Pictures, First Year,' offers a poignant reminder of the human cost of warfare during the 20th century. The vintage illustration, with its intricate details and period style, transports us back to a time when the world was on the brink of a global conflict that would change the course of history.
