Tiritiri lighthouse - built in 1864 is one of a few surviving lighthouse settlements in New Zealand
it is also one of the oldest. The cast iron used to build it was made in Britain brought out by ship and bolted together on site. It was fitted with the best lighting technology if its time and has been continually updated. It was solar powered in 1990 and fitted with a quartz iodine lamp - replacing the Xenon lamp of 11 million candlepower fitted in 1956. The adjacent cottages were formely for lighthouse keepers but are now used by conservation staff. The island is now an important bird sancturay.

Let there be light! The Tiritiri Lighthouse, standing tall and proud since 1864, is a shining beacon of history and innovation. This magnificent structure in New Zealand not only boasts being one of the oldest lighthouses but also showcases the best lighting technology of its time. Built with cast iron imported all the way from Britain, this architectural marvel was assembled on-site like a giant puzzle. Over the years, it has witnessed remarkable transformations to keep up with modern advancements. In 1956, it sported an impressive Xenon lamp that could illuminate even the darkest corners with its 11 million candlepower! But wait, there's more! In 1990, this iconic landmark embraced renewable energy before it became trendy. It went solar-powered and welcomed a quartz iodine lamp to guide ships safely through treacherous waters. Surrounding these historic walls are charming cottages once occupied by dedicated lighthouse keepers. Today, they provide shelter for conservation staff who tirelessly protect and nurture the island's vibrant bird sanctuary. Tiritiri Lighthouse stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our commitment to preserving nature's wonders. So next time you visit Auckland in New Zealand, make sure to pay homage to this vertical masterpiece that continues illuminating both land and sky.
