EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Short-tailed coatee worn by Cornets Brown, a member of the esteemed Wiltshire Yeomanry in 1799. The coatee, made from exquisite fabric, is an exemplary representation of the fashion and military attire during the late 18th century. The Wiltshire Yeomanry was established in 1794 with the primary objective of defending Britain against potential invasion during the French Revolutionary War. By 1796, it comprised various troops stationed across different towns including Devizes, Chippenham, Malmsbury, Swindon, Bradford Trowbridge and Melksham. Additionally, Everley Hindon, Sarum, Warminster and Marlborough were also part of this prestigious regiment. Not only did they serve as defenders of their homeland but also played a crucial role in maintaining peace during times of unrest. In fact, when riots erupted following the rejection of the 1830 Reform Act in Bristol, it was the Wiltshire Yeomanry who swiftly restored order to restore calmness to the city. In recognition of their exceptional service and dedication to duty over time, this gallant regiment was bestowed with royal status shortly after these events unfolded. This honor further solidified their reputation as one of Britain's most revered military units. Preserved at London's National Army Museum today is this remarkable Short-tailed coatee that once adorned Cornets Brown - a tangible piece connecting us to history while symbolizing bravery and sacrifice for one's country.
