EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Lectionary with St. Matthew, dating back to the 11th century Byzantine era. The intricate artwork is created using tempera and gold on vellum, providing an exquisite display of craftsmanship. The leaf originates from a lectionary, which was gifted to the Holy Trinity Monastery at Chalke in Constantinople by Empress Katherine Komnene in 1063. It holds immense historical significance as it contains gospel readings used during church services. In this particular image, we witness the tools of the scribe's trade meticulously laid out before the evangelists: a stylus for writing and engraving, dividers for precise measurements, pens for delicate strokes, a knife for cutting purposes, burnishers for polishing details, and inkpots to bring life to their creations. Notably featured are portraits of the authors of the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - who frequently appear in gospel books worldwide. These depictions served as authentication symbols since they were believed to be eyewitnesses to the texts they wrote. Displayed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio USA; this remarkable piece was acquired through purchase from J. H Wade Fund. Its presence offers us an opportunity to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and its cultural significance within Byzantine art history.
