EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving titled "The New Wimbledon, Camping Ground and Ranges of the National Rifle Association, Bisley Common, Surrey" takes us back to the 19th century. The image showcases a panoramic view of the prestigious shooting ranges and military camps in Bisley Common. At first glance, one cannot help but be drawn to the imposing clock tower standing tall at the north-east end of the grounds. The scene is bustling with activity as soldiers and marksmen engage in their training exercises. The great butt targets are visible in the foreground, providing a striking contrast against the picturesque landscape. To add to this lively atmosphere, we catch sight of a running man butt marker being set up by diligent individuals. Intriguingly, towards the south-east corner lies a pavilion where participants can rest and gather during breaks from their intense practice sessions. This area serves as both a camping ground for those staying overnight and an assembly point for competitors before they take on various shooting challenges. As our eyes wander further into this historical masterpiece, we notice markers mantlets strategically placed throughout the range to aid shooters in honing their skills. In addition to these remarkable details, it is worth mentioning that this engraving was originally featured in The Illustrated London News on July 12th, 1890. "The New Wimbledon" print offers us an enchanting glimpse into an era when precision shooting was held in high regard by military personnel and enthusiasts alike.
