New Pavilion Saltair and bathers, Salt Lake City, USA
The New Pavilion Saltair (built in 1926) and bathers on Great Salt Lake, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The first Saltair, completed in 1893, was jointly owned by a corporation associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called Mormons) and the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company (which originally served the site). Saltair was a family place, intended to provide a safe and wholesome atmosphere with the open supervision of Church leaders. Interestingly, this postcard uses the same plate (as 10652128), but reduces the visible gap of water to change the composition! Date: circa 1926

The Bat and Ball Public House, Hambledon, 1908
Photograph showing the Bat and Ball Public House at Hambledon, circa 1908. The pub was formerly known as the Broadhalfpenny Hut and was used as a pavilion by the Hambledon Cricket club in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Broadhalfpenny Down is considered to be the birthplace of modern cricket; hence the importance of the Bat and Ball public house

Jain cosmological map, 19th century
Jain cosmological map, 19th century. Titled Manusyaloka ('map of the world of man'), this artwork shows the world according to the cosmological traditions of Jainism, an ancient religion of India. Human couples are seen in pavilions at different levels, with rivers and world-girdling oceans (blue rings) separating them. The central continent (Jambudvipa, the island of the rose apple tree) has rivers and six mighty mountains (rows with triangles), with Mount Meru at centre (yellow circle). This artwork, from western Rajasthan, India, is gouache (a type of paint) on cloth, and dates from the 1890s
