1268534 Eagle standard finial, French 105th Infantry Regiment, Battle of Waterloo, 1815 (gilded metal) by French School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Captured by Captain Alexander Kennedy Clark (1782-1864), 1st (or Royal) Dragoons, at the Battle of Waterloo, 18 June 1815. This eagle was one of nearly 100 presented by Napoleon to his army in 1815, replacing those of 1804 which had been destroyed during his exile. At Waterloo the 105th Regiment took part in the unsuccessful attack by D Erlons Corps on the Allied left. The French were stopped by General Pictons Division and then driven back by the British heavy cavalry. Captain Clark was severely wounded at the end of the battle. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Eagle standard finial of the French 105th Infantry Regiment, a significant artifact from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Crafted with gilded metal, this intricate piece was captured by Captain Alexander Kennedy Clark of the 1st (or Royal) Dragoons during the historic battle. Napoleon Bonaparte had presented nearly 100 similar eagles to his army in 1815 as replacements for those destroyed during his exile. The eagle represented power and strength, symbolizing Napoleon's imperial ambitions. During the Battle of Waterloo, the 105th Regiment participated in an unsuccessful attack led by D'Erlon's Corps on the Allied left flank. However, their advance was halted by General Picton's Division and subsequently pushed back by British heavy cavalry. Captain Clark played a pivotal role in capturing this prized eagle but unfortunately did not receive due recognition for his bravery. Corporal Francis Styles of F Troop, Royal Dragoons, whom Captain Clark entrusted with carrying the eagle to safety after being wounded himself at the end of battle, received all credit for its capture. This extraordinary photograph preserves not only a remarkable historical artifact but also tells a tale of valor and sacrifice on that fateful day at Waterloo. It serves as a testament to both human resilience and our enduring fascination with relics that bear witness to momentous events like these.
