EDITORS COMMENTS
The vibrant lithograph titled "Boum!!! Champagne!" captures a moment of pure joy and celebration. Created in 1895 by the French School, this colourful print showcases Pierrot, a beloved character from traditional pantomimes, as he opens a bottle of champagne with excitement. This artwork was originally designed as a promotional card for the renowned Parisian Department Store Au Bon Marché. Founded by Aristide Boucicaut and his wife Marguerite in the mid-19th century, this pioneering establishment revolutionized shopping experiences in France. The Boucicauts introduced numerous innovations such as fixed prices, home delivery, extensive product choices, guarantees on exchanges or returns, catalogues, mail order services, and advertising. Their department stores were not only about commerce but also aimed to provide an enjoyable experience for shoppers. They created glamorous interiors and targeted families by offering reading rooms for husbands while their wives made purchases. Additionally, they distributed attractively produced cards like this lithograph to children as an incentive for frequent visits. The development of department stores played a significant role in democratizing consumption and empowering women to shop independently. By giving them the freedom and ability to make their own purchasing decisions, society became more egalitarian. This lithograph serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a testament to the transformative impact that visionary entrepreneurs like Aristide Boucicaut had on retailing history.
