EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of ancient Egyptian art - a Cartonnage mummy case dating back to the Late Ptolemaic Dynasty to Early Roman Empire, around 50 BC-AD 50. The mummy case, housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, is made from cartonnage material which resembles papier-mâché but is constructed using layers of linen instead of paper. The intricate details on this mummy case are truly awe-inspiring. The face is meticulously modeled in plaster and adorned with gilded accents and glass inlays. Traditional funerary motifs grace the body's painted surface: Osiris, the god of the afterlife, sits majestically while being transformed into a mummified form; Abydos' holy city fetish stands alongside deities Thoth and Shu; an outspread-winged Horus falcon symbolizes protection; and Sokar's bark completes this divine ensemble. Seated deities line the sides of this magnificent artifact while a winged scarab beetle flanked by Anubis jackals adorns its head. Even more fascinating are the soles of sandals painted on its foot for eternal comfort during the journey to the afterlife, accompanied by protective scorpions. Gifted to the Cleveland Museum by John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust, this Egyptian masterpiece offers us an extraordinary glimpse into ancient burial practices and beliefs surrounding death. Its preservation serves as a testament to both human creativity and reverence for life beyond our mortal existence.
