EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful moment in history - the Horse Picket of Royal Horse Artillery preparing for an attack on Colesberg in 1899. The image, taken by Underwood & Underwood, showcases the dedication and bravery of these soldiers during the Boer War. The Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) played a crucial role in providing artillery support to the cavalry. Mounted on horses, wagons, or limbers, they were able to keep up with the fast-moving units on the battlefield. This photograph offers a glimpse into their preparations before charging into battle. The scene is filled with energy as horses stand ready alongside their riders. From racehorses to ponies and shire horses, this diverse group of animals represents both strength and agility. Their presence adds an element of wildness to this otherwise organized military setting. The composition highlights not only the soldiers but also their loyal companions - these magnificent creatures who are just as much a part of this historic event. It serves as a reminder that war affects not only humans but also innocent animals caught up in its chaos.
