EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in the photo print, Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, is crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey on January 6, 1066. The coronation took place despite the claim of William, Duke of Normandy, who believed he was rightfully entitled to the English throne. Harold's ascension to the throne came after the unexpected death of King Edward the Confessor in October 1066. Edward had reportedly promised the crown to both Harold and Harold's brother Tostig, but the exact nature of these promises remains unclear. When Harold was crowned, he had the support of the Witan, the English council of advisors, and the majority of the English people. However, William, who had been exiled from England in 1051, saw this as an opportunity to reclaim the throne that he believed was rightfully his. He had a stronger claim due to his relationship with Edward, who had reportedly promised him the crown in his dying moments. The ensuing conflict between Harold and William would come to be known as the Norman Conquest. In September 1066, William's forces invaded England, and Harold's army was defeated at the Battle of Hastings. Harold was killed during the battle, and William was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066. This print captures a pivotal moment in English history, as Harold is crowned king despite the challenges to his claim. The events of 1066 would have far-reaching consequences, shaping the course of English history for centuries to come. Harold Godwinson, also known as Harold II or Harold the Godwinson, was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. His reign lasted just over a year, from January 6, 1066 to September 28, 1066. William, Duke of Normandy, who later became known as William the Conqueror, ruled England from 1066 until his death in 1087.
