Statue by Praxiteles of Athens, the son of Cephisodotus the Elder - the most renowned of the Attic sculptors of the 4th century BC. He was the first to sculpt the nude female form in a life-size statue. While no attributable sculpture by Praxiteles is extant, numerous copies of his works have survived; contemporary authors, including Pliny the Elder, wrote of his oeuvres; and coins engraved with silhouettes of his various famous statuary types from the period still exist. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a replica of the renowned Statue by Praxiteles of Athens, a masterpiece of ancient Greek sculpture from the 4th century BC. Praxiteles, the son of Cephisodotus the Elder, was a preeminent Attic sculptor, celebrated for his groundbreaking depictions of the nude female form in life-size statues. Although no original work by Praxiteles has survived, numerous copies and descriptions from contemporary authors, including Pliny the Elder, have preserved his artistic legacy. The statue, believed to represent Aphrodite or one of her attendants, is depicted in a semi-draped state, with only a delicate amphora covering her modesty. Praxiteles' innovative approach to sculpting the human form in a naturalistic and lifelike manner revolutionized Greek art and set a new standard for future generations. The statue's graceful curves and fluid movements evoke a sense of elegance and sensuality, making it a testament to Praxiteles' unparalleled skill and artistic vision. This exquisite replica offers a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of ancient Greece, allowing us to appreciate the mastery and ingenuity of a true artistic pioneer. The statue's enduring allure continues to captivate and inspire, making it a cherished symbol of the classical world.
