USS Langley aircraft carrier, 1928

USS Langley aircraft carrier (foreground) with aircraft (Vought VE-7) on its flight deck. In the background is the destroyer the USS Somers. The USS Langley was the US Navys first aircraft carrier. This ship was originally the USS Jupiter (launched 1912), but was converted between 1920 and 1922 into an aircraft carrier. The ship was named after US aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. It was scuttled during the Second World War in 1942 following damage from enemy attack. Photographed in 1928, off San Diego, California, USA. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the USS Langley aircraft carrier, an iconic vessel that marked a significant milestone in US naval history. In this stunning image captured in 1928 off the coast of San Diego, California, the USS Langley takes center stage with its flight deck adorned by Vought VE-7 aircraft. The destroyer USS Somers gracefully stands in the background, adding to the maritime grandeur of this scene. Originally known as the USS Jupiter and launched in 1912, this pioneering ship underwent a remarkable transformation between 1920 and 1922 to become America's first-ever aircraft carrier. Named after Samuel Pierpont Langley, a trailblazing figure in aviation, it symbolized a new era of naval warfare. The photograph's monochrome aesthetic transports us back to an early chapter of the 20th century when biplanes ruled the skies. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination as nations sought innovative ways to project power across land and sea. Tragically, during World War II in 1942, enemy attacks inflicted severe damage on the USS Langley leading to its scuttling. However, its legacy lives on through images like these that capture moments frozen in time. Preserved within Science Photo Library's extensive archives from Bain News Service—one of America's earliest news picture libraries—this historical gem offers us glimpses into North American maritime history while honoring those who paved the way for modern naval aviation.
