Pavel Petrovich Anosov (1799-1851), Russian metallurgist. Anosov was born at St. Petersburg but at the age of seven he moved with his family to Perm, where his father had been appointed adviser to the mining administration. Pavel was educated at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute and made his career in steel manufacture at the Zlatoust State Works. He created the first refractory smelting vessels in Russia, previously these had been imported at great cost, and devised a way of carburizing steel using gas instead of coal. He was the first to use the microscope to study the crystalline structure of steel and other alloys
