Capturing the Forgotten Past - A Glimpse into Cornwall's Rich Railway History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print transports us back in time to the long-abandoned Angarrack Incline, near Hayle, Cornwall. As we gaze upon this forgotten relic of the past, a sense of mystery and nostalgia fills the air. The Hayle railway, once a vital lifeline for Cornwall's thriving mining industry, is now but a distant memory. The railway originally connected Redruth to Portreath and Tresavean, serving as an essential transportation route for precious ores destined for shipping. Constructed in stages after December 1837, it played a crucial role in driving economic growth during its heyday. A focal point of this remarkable line was undoubtedly the steep incline at Angarrack. Here at this very spot captured by an unknown photographer, wagons were laboriously hauled uphill using ropes—a testament to human ingenuity and determination. Today, nature has reclaimed what was once bustling with activity. Overgrown vegetation blankets the tracks that once echoed with locomotive sounds. Yet amidst this serene scene lies an untold story waiting to be discovered—a tale of hardworking miners and their tireless efforts to extract treasures from deep within Cornwall's rugged landscape. As we admire this evocative image from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, let us reflect on our rich heritage and appreciate those who came before us—forging paths that have shaped our present-day world.
