Charlestown harbour and shipping, Cornwall. 1914
Charlestown harbour looking out to sea. The harbour is full of a mixture of both steam and sail shipping. SS Westdale on the east quay, (left of picture) is steel built and screw driven. She was built in South Shields in 1911 and owned in Liverpool. Alongside the west quay (right) is the schooner, Belmont, built in Whitstable in 1895 and owned in Faversham. On the left, in front of the cottages, is a good view of the covered gantry carrying tram rails and the loading chutes of the tram way, which carried China clay underground from the large clay dry a few hundred yards away and out of picture, to load the ships. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling scene of Charlestown harbour in Cornwall, back in 1914. The picturesque harbor is teeming with a fascinating mix of steam and sail shipping vessels, showcasing the transition between traditional sailing ships and modern steel-built steamships. On the left side of the picture stands the impressive SS Westdale, a steel-built ship powered by a screw drive. This Liverpool-owned vessel was constructed in South Shields just three years prior to this photograph. Adjacent to it, on the right quay, rests the elegant Belmont schooner. Built in Whitstable almost two decades earlier in 1895, this Faversham-owned beauty adds charm to an already enchanting maritime panorama. The foreground reveals more intriguing details; we catch sight of quaint cottages nestled against a backdrop of masts and rigging. In front of these cottages lies a covered gantry adorned with tram rails and loading chutes for transporting China clay underground from nearby clay drys that are not visible within this frame. Photographed by Herbert Hughes, this remarkable image offers us a glimpse into Charlestown's rich history as an important hub for shipping activities during that era. It serves as both a testament to human ingenuity and an ode to Cornwall's industrial heritage.
