Glastonbury Fair, 19th June 1971.
The Festival moved to the time of the Summer Solstice and was known as the Glastonbury Fayre. It had been planned by Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill who felt all other festivals at the time were over commercialised. It was paid for by the few who supported the ideal so the entrance was free and took a medieval tradition of music, dance, poetry, theatre, lights and spontaneous entertainment. It was in this year that the first pyramid stage was constructed out of scaffolding and expanded metal covered with plastic sheeting, built on a site above the Glastonbury-Stonehenge ley line. The musicians who performed recorded a now very rare album. The Festival is also captured a la Woodstock" by a 1972 film crew that included Nick Roeg, Sandy Lieberson and Si Litvinoff. This film was called Glastonbury Fayre.
Acts included: Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie, Joan Baez, Fairport Convention and Quintessence.
Attendance: estimated at 12, 000.
Price: free.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Glastonbury Fair on the 19th of June, 1971. The festival, known as Glastonbury Fayre, had a unique vision thanks to its organizers Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill. They aimed to create an event that stood apart from the over-commercialized festivals of the time. To achieve this, they relied on the support of a few individuals who shared their ideals, allowing them to offer free entrance to all attendees. The festival embraced medieval traditions by showcasing music, dance, poetry, theatre performances, enchanting lights, and spontaneous entertainment. It was during this year that the iconic pyramid stage made its debut using scaffolding and expanded metal covered with plastic sheeting. This remarkable structure was erected above the mystical Glastonbury-Stonehenge ley line. The talented musicians who graced the stage recorded an album that has become exceedingly rare today. A film crew including Nick Roeg, Sandy Lieberson, and Si Litvinoff captured this Woodstock-esque experience in a documentary called "Glastonbury Fayre" released in 1972. Amongst those who performed were legendary acts such as Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie Joan Baez, Fairport Convention, and Quintessence. The estimated attendance for this extraordinary gathering reached around 12 thousand people. This mesmerizing photograph taken by Maurice Tibbles transports us back in time to witness firsthand one of history's most iconic music festivals - where creativity flourished freely amidst nature's embrace.
