King Henry VIII School, Coventry, now has a proper gymnasium for the first time since

King Henry VIII School, Coventry, now has a proper gymnasium for the first time since 1941, when the old gym was bombed. Boys at the school, for the last 15 years, have had to do their physical training in two small huts. There was no proper equipment - only vaulting horses, mats and benches. " Its wonderful to have the new gym, " says senior games master Mr. H. Dunn. The new gym has all the latest equipment - including wall-bars that swing out at right-angles, a store-room for moveable apparatus, a masters dressing-room, and dressing rooms with showers. It is one more step forward in the schools big building programme. Work has been started on a site for a new science block. Building starts next month and it should be ready next autumn. The school will then have nine science labs - including five for advanced work. A new library, with windows looking onto the school playing fields, is almost ready. It has shelves for 15, 000 volumes. In the next few days an appeal will go out to parents and old boys, for 10, 000 is needed to stock the library. Every book in the schools old library was destroyed in the bombing.

EDITORS COMMENTS
King Henry VIII School, Coventry, finally embraces progress as it unveils its long-awaited gymnasium after 15 years of makeshift training facilities. Since the devastating bombing in 1941 that destroyed the old gym, boys at the school have persevered with physical training in cramped huts equipped only with vaulting horses, mats, and benches. However, a new era dawns as senior games master Mr. H. Dunn expresses his delight at the arrival of the state-of-the-art gymnasium. This modern facility boasts cutting-edge equipment such as swinging wall-bars, a storage room for moveable apparatus, dressing rooms complete with showers, and even a dedicated dressing room for masters. It marks another significant milestone in the school's ambitious building program which aims to enhance its infrastructure further. Exciting developments are already underway on-site for a brand-new science block scheduled to begin construction next month and expected to be completed by autumn next year. This expansion will provide an impressive total of nine science labs including five specifically designed for advanced work. Meanwhile, nearing completion is a magnificent library overlooking the school playing fields that will house up to 15,000 volumes. An appeal is soon set to launch among parents and alumni seeking £10k funding required to stock this invaluable resource since every book from their previous library was lost during wartime destruction. As we reflect upon this photograph captured on October 17th, 1956 by Memory Lane Prints staff members; we celebrate King Henry VIII School's resilience and determination towards progress.
