Coventry Boys Club have moved and more than 100 members spent their first evening
Coventry Boys Club have moved and more than 100 members spent their first evening enjoying their new premises in Whitefriars Lane, Coventry. Since 1949 the club have tried to carry out their various activities in the restricted space of the John Hough Mission, New Building, Coventry. Now they can enlarge the scope of their activities. Although already in use, the premises will not be opened officially for about another month. It was more than a year ago that Coventry Guage and Tool Ltd. offered the club one of their pavilions. The building was transported piecemeal to a site adjoining Whitefriars Lane, which will not be affected by Coventrys ring road scheme. The pavilion was re-erected and annexes were built to form a canteen, washroom, handicrafts room and stores. In the main building are a table tennis table, a billiars table and physical training equipment. During the past few days members of the management committee and some of the senior boys have cleared the building ready for use. Officially, the clubs members range from the age of 14 to 18, " But, " said Mr E. W. C. Pendleton, Chief Constable of Coventry and the clubs chairman, " some younger ones have seeped in." The club has three football teams that play each Saturday and a cricket team too. What do the boys think of it? One boy, with a billiard cue in his hand, summed up the feelings of his pals. " Gosh, its smashing, " he said. Our photo shows Mr. E. W. C. Pendleton watching members of Coventry Boys club playing snooker. On Mr. Pendletons right is Mr. F. Sherlock, club leader.

Coventry Boys Club Finds New Home in Whitefriars Lane
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this nostalgic print from 1957, we witness the joy and excitement of more than 100 members of Coventry Boys Club as they gather for their first evening at their new premises. For almost a decade, the club had been confined to the limited space of John Hough Mission's New Building in Coventry. However, thanks to the generous offer from Coventry Gauge and Tool Ltd. , one of their pavilions was transported piece by piece to a site adjacent to Whitefriars Lane. The newly re-erected building now boasts additional annexes that house a canteen, washroom, handicrafts room, and storage facilities. Inside the main building, boys can enjoy table tennis, billiards, and physical training equipment. The expanded scope of activities promises an exciting future for these young members. Led by Mr. E. W. C Pendleton, Chief Constable of Coventry and chairman of the club himself; it is evident that this move has brought immense satisfaction not only to its members but also to those overseeing its operations. With three football teams playing every Saturday and even a cricket team in place - there is no doubt that sportsmanship thrives within these walls. As we observe Mr. Pendleton watching intently while members engage in snooker play with enthusiasm; it becomes clear how much this new facility means to them all. One boy sums up his feelings simply yet powerfully: "Gosh! It's smashing!". Indeed, this photograph captures a significant milestone in the history of Coventry Boys Club as they embark on an exciting chapter filled with camaraderie and growth.
