EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of departure for a group of young girls from Barnardo's homes in the London area during the pre-war evacuation operation in September 1938. The image shows the girls, some holding small suitcases and wearing gas masks, gathered at Paddington Station in anticipation of their journey to safety. Barnardo's, a leading children's charity in Britain at the time, had taken in thousands of children in need, many of whom were orphans or from disadvantaged backgrounds. With the looming threat of war in Europe, the organization sprang into action to evacuate the children from urban areas to the countryside, where they would be safer from potential bombings and other dangers. The girls in this photograph are a small part of the larger evacuation effort, which saw over 300,000 children leave their homes and families to be cared for in various institutions and private homes. The evacuation operation was a testament to the resilience and compassion of the British people, who came together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable members of their society during a time of great uncertainty and fear. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the evacuation, and the important role that charities like Barnardo's continue to play in providing care and support to children in need.
