EDITORS COMMENTS
Urraca of León and Castile (1079-1126), also known as Urraca of Castile or Urraca of León, was a remarkable queen who ruled the kingdoms of León, Castile, and Galicia during the 11th and 12th centuries. This portrait of Urraca, taken from the Genealogies of the Kings of Spain, which was produced between 1526 and 1535, offers a glimpse into the regal presence of this important monarch. Born in León in 1079, Urraca was the daughter of Alfonso VI of León and Castile and his second wife, Constanza of Burgundy. When her father died in 1109, Urraca became the first queen regnant of León, Castile, and Galicia, ruling during a time of political instability and conflict. This portrait depicts Urraca seated on a throne, holding a scepter in her right hand and wearing a crown adorned with precious jewels. Her regal attire and the ornate throne, along with the imperial eagle emblem on the scepter, underscore her status as a powerful monarch. Urraca's reign was marked by her efforts to maintain peace and stability in her kingdoms, as well as her attempts to expand her territories. She faced challenges from within her own family, as well as from external forces, including the Almohads of North Africa. Despite these challenges, Urraca proved to be a capable and determined ruler, earning the respect and loyalty of her subjects. This portrait, with its intricate details and rich symbolism, serves as a testament to the power and majesty of Urraca of León and Castile, a queen who played a significant role in the history of Spain during the Middle Ages.
