EDITORS COMMENTS
Le Diable," or The Devil, is one of the most intriguing and enigmatic cards in the Tarot deck. This 20th-century print from Mary Evans Picture Library offers a captivating depiction of this card, which dates back to at least the 15th century. The figure in this photograph stands proudly on a plinth, his horns curling high above his head, a goat's head between them. His scaly, red skin is adorned with intricate patterns, and his hooves, each with two toes, are firmly planted on the pedestal. The Devil's face is contorted in a mischievous grin, and his eyes gleam with an otherworldly light. He wears a red robe, draped over his broad shoulders, and holds a long, pointed tail, coiled around his waist. The Devil's forehead bears the inscription "Satanas," the name of the Christian demon Satan. In his left hand, he holds a trident, and in his right, a burning torch. Above him, a star shines brightly, and a pentacle, the symbol of the five elements, is etched into the pedestal at his feet. This card has long been a subject of fascination in both the historical and paranormal realms. In folk lore, the Devil is often depicted as a seducer, tempting humans with worldly pleasures and material wealth. In the context of the Tarot, The Devil card represents materialism, attachment, and temptation. The image of The Devil has undergone many transformations throughout history, but the essence of this card remains the same: a reminder of the dangers of giving in to our base desires and losing sight of our spiritual connection. This photograph, with its rich detail and evocative imagery, offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Tarot and the enduring power of this enigmatic figure.
