EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Sultan Mehmed III Adli (1566-1603), the 33rd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who reigned from 1595 until his death. The image, believed to have been created around the year 1600, showcases the Sultan in his regal attire, adorned with a grand turban and a golden robe embroidered with intricate designs. The oval border, a common feature in Ottoman portraiture, enhances the sense of elegance and sophistication. Mehmed III, also known as Mehmet III or Mahomet III, was a member of the Ottoman Osmanlı dynasty. He assumed the throne at a young age following the death of his father, Sultan Murad III. During his reign, Mehmed III continued the Ottoman tradition of military expansion, earning the titles of 'Ghazi' and 'Khan' for his victories against the Safavids and the Habsburgs. The inscription in the upper portion of the portrait, written in Ottoman Turkish script, reads 'Sultan Mehmed Han' and 'Adli,' which translates to 'Just Mehmed.' This title signified Mehmed III's commitment to justice and fairness during his rule. Max Fruchtermann and Salis were two renowned European painters who were known for their portraits of Ottoman rulers. This portrait, with its striking composition and meticulous details, is a testament to their artistic mastery and the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire during the late 16th century.
