EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Short S23 Empire Flying Boat, G-ADDY, affectionately known as Cassiopeia, at Southampton Water prior to its historic flight to Alexandria in January 1937. The Short S23 was a British flying boat designed by Short Brothers for long-range transport and maritime patrol duties. G-ADDY was one of only three S23s built for private use, and its distinctive green and white livery made it a striking sight on the water. The date, January 1937, marks the beginning of an extraordinary journey for Cassiopeia. With the roaring sound of its engines echoing off the Southampton docks, the aircraft prepared to embark on a 2,500-mile journey across the Mediterranean Sea. The flight was a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of aviation technology at the time, as well as the daring spirit of its pilots. As the sun began to rise over the English Channel, G-ADDY took off from Southampton Water, leaving behind the familiar sights of the English coastline. The crew, led by Captain J.W.B. Barnes, navigated the aircraft through turbulent weather and challenging conditions, eventually touching down in Alexandria after an impressive 36-hour flight. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the early days of aviation and the spirit of adventure that drove pioneering pilots like Barnes and his crew to push the boundaries of what was possible. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring allure of flight and the indomitable human spirit that continues to drive us to explore new horizons.
