EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, Robert of Jumieges, the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1051 to 1070, is depicted in the regal splendor befitting his high ecclesiastical rank. Dressed in the robes of his office, the archbishop holds a pastoral staff in one hand and a large open Bible in the other, symbolizing his spiritual authority and duty to guide and teach the faithful. Robert's origins can be traced back to the Norman abbey of Jumieges in France, where he was born around the year 1000. He was educated in the monastery and later became a monk there. In 1037, he was appointed abbot of the monastery of Fecamp in Normandy, a position he held until his election as archbishop of Canterbury in 1051. Robert's tenure as archbishop was marked by significant events in English history. He played a key role in the Norman Conquest of England, which began in 1066. King Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, was defeated and killed at the Battle of Hastings, and Duke William of Normandy was crowned king. Robert, as the senior churchman in England, played a crucial role in the coronation and in the establishment of the Norman church in England. Despite his Norman origins, Robert was popular with the English people, and he worked to maintain good relations between the Norman rulers and the English population. He also continued the reforms of his predecessor, Lanfranc, and worked to strengthen the position of the archbishopric of Canterbury within the English church. Robert died in 1070, and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral. His legacy as a leader of the English church during a time of great change continues to be celebrated, and he is remembered as a key figure in the history of both Normandy and England. This image, with its striking depiction of Robert in his regal robes, offers a glimpse into the power and authority of the archbishop of Canterbury during the Middle Ages.
