EDITORS COMMENTS
Arthur Rimbaud: The French Poet at Harrar (1854-1891) This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Arthur Rimbaud, the renowned French poet, during his brief sojourn in the exotic city of Harar, Ethiopia, in the late 19th century. Rimbaud, born in Charleville-Mézières, France, in 1854, is considered one of the most influential poets of the modernist movement. Known for his unconventional lifestyle and revolutionary poetic techniques, Rimbaud abandoned poetry in his late twenties and embarked on a series of trading journeys to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The photograph, taken around 1890, shows Rimbaud wearing a traditional Ethiopian robe, a sign of his immersion in the local culture. His intense gaze and unkempt beard add to the mystique that has long surrounded the poet. Harar, a historic city in eastern Ethiopia, was a major trading hub and a melting pot of diverse cultures. Rimbaud spent several months there, trading in coffee and other commodities. During his time in Harar, Rimbaud wrote letters to his friend Paul Verlaine, detailing his experiences and observations. These letters, which were later published as 'Letters from Harar,' are considered some of Rimbaud's most important works. They offer a unique insight into the poet's thoughts and feelings during his travels and provide a vivid account of life in Harar during the late 19th century. This photograph is a testament to Rimbaud's adventurous spirit and his ability to immerse himself in new cultures. It also serves as a reminder of the profound impact that travel and exploration can have on an artist's work and personal growth. Despite his untimely death in 1891, Rimbaud's legacy as a groundbreaking poet and literary innovator continues to inspire generations of writers and artists.
