Rationing - WW1 - Fancy Dress Costume

Rationing was introduced into Britain at the tale end of World War One - in February 1918. Rationing was introduced in response to an effective U-boat campaign and during World War One, the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) was used to ensure that food shortages never occurred. Food Control (another phrase for food rationing) only existed for six months (giving us a perfectly accurate date for this card!). Date: 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Charming Depiction of War-Time Fancy Dress: Rationing Practise in 1918 Amidst the backdrop of World War One, with the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) in full effect, this image showcases a young woman donning a fancy dress costume, complete with an apron, as she engages in a rationing practise session. The year is 1918, a time when food rationing, or Food Control as it was then known, was introduced into Britain for the very first time. The effective U-boat campaign had resulted in food shortages, and the British government, determined to prevent any further hardships, enacted the Defence of the Realm Act to regulate the distribution of essential food supplies. Food rationing only lasted for a brief six months, but its impact was significant. In this charming photograph, the woman wears a fancy dress, a luxury that was now a thing of the past for many. The apron she wears, however, is a symbol of her newfound responsibility as a rationer. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime, as people adapted to the new reality of rationing and did their part to ensure the survival of their communities. The elegance and grace of the woman in the photograph contrast sharply with the harsh realities of the war, making it a poignant and thought-provoking representation of the human spirit during a time of great adversity.
