EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic Queen Mary Ocean Liner making its way down the Clyde in Scotland during its inaugural voyage in 1936. The image showcases the ship's iconic three giant whistles, two positioned on the fore funnel and one on the midships funnel. Each whistle measured an impressive seven feet in length and could be heard five miles away, yet their low pitch ensured they did not disturb the luxury cruise's passengers. The Queen Mary, a symbol of opulence and innovation in ocean travel, was the largest and most expensive ocean liner ever built at the time. Its size required the assistance of tugs to navigate the narrow waters of the Clyde. To communicate with the tugs, a series of whistle signals were used, indicating the position of the pilots and navigating officers on board. This photograph transports us back to the 1930s, a time when ocean travel was an exciting and glamorous event. The Queen Mary, operated by Cunard Line, represented the pinnacle of oceanic transport, offering passengers a luxurious and unforgettable cruising experience. This image, with its historic significance and nostalgic charm, is a testament to the grandeur of the era and the enduring allure of ocean liners.
