In this photograph from the 1930s, the Queen Mary Ocean Liner undergoes the intricate process of fitting out at the John Brown & Company shipyard in Scotland. After her successful launch on 26 September 1934, the transformation of this empty steel interior shell into a luxurious floating hotel began in earnest. The complex programme of work involved a multitude of tasks, from installing fixtures and fittings to supplying and fitting out the various amenities that would make the Queen Mary a true marvel of ocean travel. Craftsmen meticulously worked on every detail, from the grand staircases and opulent public rooms to the comfortable bedrooms and swimming pools.
