EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 18th century oil on canvas portrait depicts Pius VI, Pope from 1775 to 1799. Born in Concesello, Italy in 1717, he was elected Pope at the age of 61. His papacy was marked by the opposition of the Catholic monarchies to the French Revolution and the subsequent French occupation of the Papal States. In this portrait, the Pope is depicted in full regalia, wearing the papal tiara and robes adorned with gold and ermine. His expression is serious and contemplative, reflecting the challenges he faced during his reign. The painting is an anonymous work, and its origin is attributed to France, specifically the department of Yvelines, with the National Museum of Versailles as its current home. The vertical, upright composition and rich color palette add to the grandeur and majesty of the portrait, making it a significant historical piece that captures the essence of the early modern era and the enduring power of the Catholic Church.
