Born in Vienna on May 21, 1527, Philip was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and his consort, Isabella of Portugal. He ascended to the throne of Spain in 1556, following his father's abdication, and ruled until his death in 1598. During his reign, Philip II worked to centralize power in the Spanish monarchy and expand its territories. He is perhaps best known for his military campaigns, which included the Seven Years' War against France and the Armada against England.
