EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Paul Gustave Dore's illustration of Chapter III, the first part of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's renowned novel "Don Quixote," published between 1875 and 1876. The illustration captures a pivotal moment from the story where the eccentric protagonist, Don Quixote, embarks on his chivalric journey by having himself dubbed as a knight. In the image, Don Quixote, portrayed by the French artist Hippolyte-Joseph Pisan (1822-1890), is shown with a slow and measured gait as he walks, symbolizing the beginning of his grand adventure. The scene is set in Spain, with Madrid's National Library serving as the backdrop. Pisan, who also went by the name of Hippolyte-Joseph Lalande, was a prolific illustrator and painter, known for his intricate and detailed works. His collaboration with Dore on the "Don Quixote" illustrations resulted in some of the most iconic visual interpretations of the classic novel. Gustave Dore (1832-1883), the mastermind behind the project, was a renowned French artist, engraver, and illustrator. Together, Pisan and Dore brought the whimsical and fantastical world of Don Quixote to life through their stunning illustrations, which continue to captivate audiences to this day.
