1. Title: Obtossaway, Objibwa Chief (circa 1860) Obtossaway, also known as Obtishkway-quay-quay or Obtishkway-quay-quay-quay, was a prominent Objibwa (Chippewa) chief from the Lake Huron region in the mid-19th century. Born around 1810, Obtossaway became a respected leader among his people during a time of significant change and upheaval. This striking photograph captures Obtossaway in traditional Objibwa attire, adorned with intricate beadwork and a headdress made of feathers and animal pelts. His piercing gaze and strong posture convey a sense of wisdom, courage, and determination. The photograph was likely taken during one of Obtossaway's visits to the United States, where he met with government officials and advocated for the rights of his people. At the time, the Objibwa were facing numerous challenges, including encroachment on their lands, forced relocation, and the spread of disease. Despite these challenges, Obtossaway remained a steadfast advocate for his people, using his influence and diplomatic skills to negotiate treaties and protect their interests. He was known for his eloquence and persuasiveness, earning the respect of both Native American and European leaders. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the resilience and leadership of Native American chiefs like Obtossaway, who faced immense challenges but continued to fight for the rights and well-being of their communities. It is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the Objibwa people and the important role they continue to play in North American history.
