EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a Royal Air Force (RAF) Armstrong Whitworth A.W.38 Whitley Mk.III, with the distinctive Tiger engine, as it was repurposed for paratroop training at a Parachute Training School in September 1941. The Whitley Mk.III, once a formidable long-range bomber, was no longer used operationally by the RAF by this time. The absence of the retractable dustbin turret, visible in the hole on the side of the aircraft, is a clear indication of its new role. Prospective paratroops would use this opening to exit the aircraft during training exercises. The Whitley Mk.III, with its versatile design, proved to be an effective platform for paratroop transport, despite its retirement from frontline service. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the adaptability and resourcefulness of the RAF during wartime, as they found innovative ways to utilize their aircraft fleet.
