EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the adventurous spirit of Rosita Forbes (née Rosita Lowell), an intrepid traveler and explorer who spent much of her life in Africa. Born in 1890 in New York City, Forbes married Arthur T. McGrath in 1913, and together they embarked on a series of expeditions across the African continent. Forbes' passion for Africa began in 1911, when she accompanied her husband on a journey to the Belgian Congo. Over the next several decades, she traveled extensively throughout the continent, often in the company of her husband, who served as a British colonial administrator. Forbes' experiences in Africa inspired her to write several travel books, including "The African Journey" (1921), which chronicled her adventures and offered insightful observations on African culture and society. In this photograph, taken in the early 1920s, Forbes is shown wearing a safari hat and holding a pair of binoculars, her eyes scanning the horizon with a sense of curiosity and wonder. The backdrop of the African savannah, with its vast expanse of golden grasses and towering acacia trees, underscores the sense of adventure and exploration that defined Forbes' life. Despite the challenges and dangers that came with traveling in Africa during this era, Forbes remained dedicated to exploring the continent and sharing her experiences with the world. Her writings continue to be celebrated for their vivid descriptions of African landscapes and cultures, as well as for their insightful commentary on the complexities of colonialism and the human condition. This photograph serves as a testament to Forbes' indomitable spirit and her enduring legacy as a pioneering traveler and explorer in Africa.
