This exquisite 18th-century painting by Jose del Castillo, titled "Battle of Arbelas or Battle of Gaugamela," depicts a pivotal moment in ancient history: the combat between Alexander the Great of Macedonia and the Persian King Darius III in 331 BC. The painting, which is housed at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain, transports us back to the 4th century BC and the height of the Hellenic League's power. Alexander, dressed in his royal cloak and wearing a helmet, is shown on horseback, leading his troops into battle against Darius III's vast Persian army.
