The Hellenic civilization is one of the oldest and most influential in the world, and is a culture that has had a profound impact on Western civilization, from its language and literature to its art, architecture, philosophy, and politics. The Hellenic period began around 800 BC with the rise of city-states such as Athens and Sparta. This period saw the development of democracy in Athens, which was based on an assembly of citizens who voted on laws and elected officials to represent them. It also saw great advances in literature, philosophy, science, mathematics, medicine and engineering. During this time Greece became a major trading power in the Mediterranean region as well as a center for learning and culture. The Hellenes were known for their love of beauty; their art included sculpture depicting gods or heroes from mythology or everyday life scenes such as weddings or funerals. They also developed advanced systems of government including democracy in Athens which served as an inspiration for later political systems throughout Europe. After Alexander's conquests spread Greek culture throughout much of Asia Minor it continued to influence other cultures through trade networks across Eurasia until it was eventually replaced by Roman rule during the first century BC.
