This striking photograph captures a pivotal moment in the political history of 19th century Britain: the forcible removal of Charles Stewart Parnell from the House of Commons on 3 February 1881. The Irish nationalist leader, who had been a member of Parliament since 1875, was expelled from the House following a heated debate on the issue of Irish land tenure and the role of the Irish Parliamentary Party. In the image, Parnell, dressed in a dark suit and wearing a top hat, can be seen standing in the middle of the chamber, surrounded by a sea of parliamentarians.
