EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Scenes in Africa," offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Khoikhoi people in South Africa during the early 19th century. The image is taken from Reverend Isaac Taylor's publication, "Scenes in Africa for the Amusement and Instruction of Little Tarry-at-Home Travelers," published by Harris and Son in London in 1820. In the foreground, a group of Khoikhoi men and women are shown outside their kraal or village of huts. They are dressed in traditional attire, including kross sheepskin capes and aprons. The women carry baskets on their heads, while the men tend to their livestock. The huts, made of mud and thatch, are typical of those found in the Khoikhoi settlements along the northern coast of the Cape Colony. To the right, another scene depicts Khoikhoi people engaged in ostrich hunting. With their bows and arrows, they pursue the flightless birds, a significant source of food and materials for the community. The third scene in this engraving shows a preacher addressing a group of Khoikhoi people gathered around a wagon. This scene underscores the early missionary efforts in the region, as European settlers sought to spread Christianity among the indigenous population. The presence of graves in the background of the scenes serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by the Khoikhoi people during this time. Despite the hardships, the resilience and adaptability of the Khoikhoi people are evident in their continued presence and influence in South African culture to this day.
