EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking woodblock engraving, titled "Attaque de Nègres Africains sur des Planteurs Européens" (Attack of African Natives on European Plant Hunters), is taken from the highly regarded horticultural publication "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires, published in Ghent, Belgium in 1851. The image depicts a tense and chaotic scene of European plant hunters under attack from a group of South African natives in the mid-19th century. The plant hunters, dressed in safari attire and armed with rifles, are shown in a state of surprise and defense, as they are ambushed from the dense foliage of the African landscape. The natives, depicted with spears and shields, appear determined and fierce in their assault. The mid-19th century was a time of intense exploration and discovery in the field of botany, as European horticulturists and collectors sought out new and exotic plant species from around the world. The dangerous and often treacherous nature of plant hunting expeditions in unfamiliar territories made them a risky endeavor, as illustrated in this engraving. The encounter between European plant hunters and native populations was not always peaceful, as shown in this dramatic scene. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and often fraught relationships between European explorers and the people they encountered in their quest for new plant specimens.
