EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the bravery and determination of Corporal John Shaw of the 2nd Life Guards during the pivotal Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. The large and imposing figure of Shaw, dressed in the distinctive blue and red uniform of the 2nd Life Guards, engages in hand-to-hand combat with a group of French cuirassiers. The intensity of the conflict is palpable, with horses rearing and soldiers locked in fierce battle. Despite his size and strength, Shaw was an obvious target for the enemy, who surrounded him and inflicted fatal injuries. He was buried near the battlefield, but his remains were later repatriated by Sir Walter Scott, the renowned Scottish author, and the skull was kept in his library at Abbotsford. A plaster cast of the skull is now on display at the Household Cavalry Museum, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during this historic battle. The Battle of Waterloo, fought in Belgium, marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the rise of the British Empire as a major world power. Shaw's valiant efforts on the battlefield were just one of many stories of heroism and sacrifice that unfolded that day. The image of Shaw fighting the French cuirassiers is a powerful symbol of the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this epic conflict.
