EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful postcard image captures the awe-inspiring Coronation Stone in Kingston upon Thames during the 1910s. The Coronation Stone, also known as the Stone of Scone or the Stone of Destiny, is an ancient sarsen block that has been used in the coronation ceremonies of the monarchs of England and Scotland since the 13th century. The stone, believed to have been brought to England from Scotland in the 13th century, was discovered in 1907 hidden under a chair in the coronation chair in Westminster Abbey. It was then transported to Kingston upon Thames for safekeeping during World War I. In this photograph, the stone is displayed on a raised platform, surrounded by ornate railings. Women in elegant dresses gather around, gazing at the ancient relic with wonder and reverence. The Coronation Stone is flanked by the emblems of the Drewett Sons Printers, who produced this postcard. The Griffin, a symbol of power and strength, is prominently displayed on the printers' emblem. The Coronation Stone is steeped in history and tradition. It is said to have been used in the coronations of several Anglo-Saxon kings, including Athelstan, Eadred, Aethelred Unready, Edward the Elder, and Edmund the Martyr. The stone's connection to British royalty and the rich history of the monarchy makes it a popular tourist attraction and a source of national pride. This postcard is a charming snapshot of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the past and the fascination with the ancient Coronation Stone in Kingston upon Thames during the 1910s.
